21

SINGLE — 2022

A few weeks after turning 21 in 2020, Navakaine wrote “21” alone; the first single off her sophomore album Woman in Fear. On the track, she laments about the death of her youth, and her longing for the American dream.

The sound of “21” is still undeniably Navakaine, but the youthful melancholia that defines Aftersummer is traded for a more cinematic tragedy; backed by grandiose string arrangements and wistful guitars. Ultimately, “21” ends the era of Navakaine as the heartbroken girl last heard on Aftersummer, and begins the next chapter of the same songstress as a woman going through darker times.

RISE FROM THAT GRAVE

SINGLE — 2021

The standalone single “Rise From That Grave” is Navakaine’s love letter (and “get well soon”) to her home country, Indonesia, which was at the time suffering through the pandemic. Her proceeds from the song will go towards various coronavirus relief funds on the donation platform Indonesia Lawan Corona (Indonesia Against Corona).

AFTERSUMMER

ALBUM — 2020

The raw debut album Aftersummer was finished in 2018, but never saw the light of day until Navakaine threw caution in the wind during the height of the pandemic and released the record with zero promotion. Sonically, it’s an alternative dream-pop landscape decorated with both anthemic and mellow melodies. Story-wise, it’s a moody record about getting over a heartbreak and partying. However, stripped down to its core, Aftersummer is a personal essay on the artist’s late teenage years, and the feverish pursuit of finding freedom in being alone in New York City.

SKYLINER

SINGLE — 2018

Navakaine first emerged onto the scene with her alternative-pop debut single titled “Skyliner”. The song was penned when the songstress was only sixteen years old, at her aunt’s house in Everett, Washington. What once was thought as a diary entry turned into the melancholic melody that best embodies Navakaine as an artist: moody, allegorical, and always set in an iconic American city.
